Human in Public

A body of work on staying present inside the conditions of life

Most people spend much of their lives functioning well enough, and carrying more than they can account for.

The body is receiving more than it's been given language to name. The nervous system is working inside conditions it wasn't built to sustain indefinitely. Attention fragments. Rhythm becomes unreliable. The usual responses don't quite hold.

Human in Public is a body of work that studies this. Not to fix it - to understand what's happening, and to develop the capacity to remain oriented inside it.

The work is organized into five domains. Each corresponds to a terrain where pressure accumulates - and where a different kind of presence is required.

Staying Present in Change: Periods of upheaval, uncertainty, and systemic transition.

Living in a Body: The body as a site of intelligence, memory, adaptation, and regulation.

Growing in the World: Childhood, adolescence, and the formation of presence.

Being Human in Public: The moment of being seen, heard, responsible, or influential.

Designing Humane Systems: Where nervous systems meet institutions, organizations, and structures.

The Perception Is Correct, a free essay.

Something has shifted in the texture of ordinary life. The restlessness, the shortened patience, the difficulty concentrating - these aren't personal failings. They're accurate signals of an environment that genuinely isn't stable.

This essay is for people who have noticed, and haven't had language for it (yet).

About

Kendra Holton Clemens has spent twenty years studying what it takes for humans to remain present - in a body, in public, inside systems, and inside the conditions of a shifting world.

Human in Public is where that study continues.
